The family firm of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company was established in 1802 and during the 19th century it became one of the United States' most important manufacturers of black powder. George W. Jones was an employee of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company. He was born on October 17, 1868, and began work as a common powderman in the Upper Yard of the Brandywine Works on May 22, 1890, and after several promotions was eventually employed in the Powder Testing Bureau.
